DIVE ATLANTIS CORAL NURSERY DURING YOUR VISIT TO ATLANTIS DUMAGUETE!

Guests at Atlantis Dumaguete building the coral nursery

Coral Reefs are a fascinating underwater ecosystem, complex and ancient habitats, over 500 million years old!

Often referred to as “rainforests of the sea,” they are a critical component of life in the ocean. Coral reef ecosystems are one of the most biodiverse in the world, inhabiting around 25% of all marine species, including sharks and sea turtles, crustaceans, and schooling fish.

Coral reefs are sensitive to water conditions, which affect their health. They are under threat from various factors, mostly derived by human activity. We have lost more than half of the world’s coral reefs in the last 30 years, and without immediate action, all shallow water coral reefs may vanish by the end of this century.

Understanding the importance of collaborative effort through education, Atlantis Dive Resorts teamed with three incredible NGOs (Non Governmental Organizations) to bring coral restoration to the heart and core of our activity- OUR DIVERS!

Along with our incredible partners: Coral Restoration Foundation, The Living Planet Aquarium, and The Mead Foundation, and in collaboration with our guests, we setup the largest coral nursery in Dauin.

In the Philippines, coral reefs are one of the most vivid in the world. They are not deteriorating or suffering from diseases. The idea of the coral nursery in Dauin is to increase the reef area to provide naturally sheltered habitats for our unique marine life.

The ongoing maintenance of the trees include cleaning the coral fragments (called coral of opportunities) and the tree structure from algae, and data collection to monitor the growth. If you want to take part, all you need to do is devote 20-40 minutes from one of your dives to dive the trees. All training and tools are provided by our team. You should have good buoyancy to be able to work on the trees. The trees are at about 15 meters / 45 feet depth and hence accessible by all certification level divers.

Have an amazing dive vacation and make a difference!
