The Tale of Apo Island – A Tiny Island’s Efforts go a Long Way

Presented by: Roni Ben-Aharon

Using less plastic, throwing less plastic, supporting sustainable fishing, recycling, buying tuna from a dolphin safe fishery, us ocean lovers do what we can to protect the big blue. But protecting something so vast, with so many affecting factors, one’s efforts may feel like a drop in the ocean. Nevertheless, small scales can make a huge difference, and such is the story of Apo Island, one of the first Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Philippines, making marine conservation history one fish at a time.

A global nomad who escaped the corporate world to become a dive professional, Roni Ben-Aharon has spent the last decade holding management and marketing roles in the dive industry.  Meshing industry knowledge with her strong passion for conservation, Roni actively promotes sustainable dive tourism while raising awareness for marine conservation. Finding and Photographing Fishes and Their Behaviors

Presented by: Marty Snyderman

No doubt about it, the amazing diversity in the world of fishes is a feature that brings many people to diving. But there is a lot more to enjoying the world of fishes than just seeing them and moving on. Learning where and when to look for different species, watching fishes go about their daily lives, gaining some understanding of their nuanced behaviors, and photographing them can add a lot of fun to your diving. Certainly, photographing fishes well is an endeavor filled with challenges. But it is also very educational in terms of getting to know Mother Ocean, and it is lot of fun and extremely rewarding when you capture the images you have in mind.

In Marty’s “Zoominar”, he will share insights into how to find various fish species in the reef communities and muck where we dive at Atlantis, insights into behaviors, and his thoughts and techniques about what he does to try to capture his fish photographs. He has been trying to get those perfect shots for almost 50 years.

The Verde Island Passage:

Center of the Center of Marine Biodiversity and Beacon of Hope

Presented by: Terry Gosliner, Ph.D

The Verde Island Passage of the Philippines is home to the richest marine biodiversity on the
planet. New research results confirm the universal nature of this richness in almost all groups of
marine organisms from sponges to fish. Recently, advanced diving technology has permitted
the exploration of the Twilight Zone below traditional diving depths to 500 feet. This new zone
with limited light penetration is home to a host of new species and the evolutionary
relationships of twilight dwellers are just beginning to be discovered. Owing to the richness of
this area, comprehensive conservation measures and reducing the impacts of climate change
and ocean acidification are necessary to preserve the unique biota of the region. The California
Academy of Sciences, together with our many Filipino partners, are develop new scientific tools
to insure the security of this biodiversity for coming generations.

Dr. Terrence Gosliner has served the California Academy of Sciences as its Provost and
Dean of Science and Research Collections where he oversaw the development of the
Academy’s exhibits, research and educational programs during the construction of the
new Academy. As Senior Curator at the California Academy of Sciences his research
focuses on the evolution of nudibranchs and other sea slugs. Since 1992, he has focused
his research on the nudibranch fauna of the reefs of the Philippines, documenting the
most diverse marine ecosystems of the world. He was instrumental in developing the
Philippine coral reef exhibit at the Academy and has worked actively to strengthen ties
with Bay Area Filipino communities. He also has extensive experience in building
collaborations to support sustainable management and conservation of the rich reefs of
the Philippines.

Diving the Frogfish Capital of the Philippines

Presented by: Daniel Geary

Come learn about diving in Dauin (Dumaguete), the frogfish capital of the Philippines! During this presentation, we’ll talk about the various species we find in Dauin, their habitat, tips for photographing frogfish, and about the new PADI frogfish specialty course available at Atlantis.

Daniel Geary, also known as Dr. Frogfish, is a marine biologist, award-winning photographer, and PADI dive instructor based in Dauin, Philippines since 2014.
