About the leader

Gonzo is a marine scientist and conservationist. He has been working with marine megafauna research and conservation for 10 years. Originally from Argentina, he moved to the UK at 18, and onwards to the Philippines when he was 26 where he worked full-time on marine megafauna research and conservation. In 2020 he founded Marine Research and Conservation Foundation (MARECO), a marine conservation charity working to conserve marine biodiversity through charismatic species and collaborative work.

He works with a variety of different species, like turtles and rays, and with an extensive array of methods including tagging, genetics and citizen science.

Gonzalo Araujo, Ph.D., completed his doctorate in whale shark ecology and holds an MSc. in Management Science & Operational Research from the University of Warwick, UK and a BSc. in Biotechnology from the University of Nottingham, UK. He is a member of the IUCN Species Survival Commission Shark Specialist Group and a Kinship Conservation Fellow.
